tennis in NYC?

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 1:05 AM
Hi.

I was looking at the Department of Parks website for tennis permits in the city, and I got confused on whether you can only play when you have a permit or if you can play with the single-play tickets.

What if you just want to try it out (like my friends and I are doing), isn't getting a $100 permit too much?

Anyone have any personal experience with this?  We're looking at Astoria Park and some other parks in Queens.

Thanks.

Citizens for Batman in NYC

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 12:22 AM
Thank you [info]_toxicmoxy for the heads up, because this was great.

From the start of the gathering point, two women with Gotham City Times newspaper bags were giving out t-shirts, then newspapers, then more t-shirts. If you were late for the papers and some white dude with a pile of them was giving them out, that was most likely me. I had them passed off to me when they had to go back (to get more t-shirts I guess).

Then came two guys with ATTENTION PRODUCT PLUG ATTENTION Domino's Pizza Bozes ATTENTION PRODUCT PLUG ATTENTION that had a clue in it to go to the food court and find the next clue.

Some dude in a batman mask found a lock, and when opened had a note that said to go to the fountain on Centre Street and look west. Once everyone was there, giant ass batman shot from the Pace building to another building (Woolworth I think? At least the Wiki says so.), and that was it. Or at least when I left.

A highlight of the evening was some guy who was probably just in the park, somehow ended up with a bunch of people following him. He was able to get them all to go in a subway station and hop turnstiles to follow him for a clue. Best red herring ever. Me being the perfect citizen ever used my Metrocard to get in. Shame on those felons who hopped the turnstile!

subway breakdancers

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Has anyone else encountered the group of teenagers who breakdance on the subway for money? I don't mean on the platform. I mean IN THE SUBWAY CAR. I've seen them twice now and always on the busiest trains--once on the C at Penn Station, where half the people riding are carrying luggage. They ask people to move for them to breakdance really badly, and actually hit some lady while spinning around. Aside from not giving them money, is there anything to do about them?

Sunless Tanning Suggestions?

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 10:24 PM
I feel like I saw a post about this recently-ish, but I couldn't find it and the tags didn't help, either. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a sunless tan, like the kind they spray on you in a booth. However, I've never done it before and I don't know the first thing about what to look for, what to pay, etc.

Can any of you lovely folk recommend a place to get a good, subtle spray-on tan from nice people for a price that won't break the bank? And what do I need to know, going in?

Beach Bum Tanning had a coupon on their website for a $15 tan for first-timers. Does that seem too cheap? Anyone have any experience with that place? I don't want to look like an Oompa Loompa at my friend's wedding.

Thank you!
Maybe if we ignore [info]rhodamine it'll go away?

It seems to live on attention and trapping people with leading questions and evocative responses, e.g. it treats you disrespectfully and occasionally employs bad language so you respond by calling it a "jerk" or a "hypocrite" and it responds with "Why resort to name-calling?" This is one of its many tactics to draw out a discussion, particularly forcing the conversation away from the original topic.

It has no concept of the constructive merits of a community and it rarely adds anything positive to the discussion, so why engage it other than because it sent you a poorly thought-out response that is only nominally relevant to what you had previously written?

Trolls live on attention. So maybe if we ignore, it'll go away?

Hair growth help

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Ugh. So, I am growing my hair out a little bit (from a pixie to a bob) and I am having a rough time of it because now I look like Velma from Scooby Doo. I have thick bangs to my eye brows and a think growth of hair in the back with the bottom layer just reaching the nape. Combine this with the glasses I have to wear and I feel like a mop head. Does anyone have any tips for styling, or hair cut/shape suggestions to ease this transition. I feel like a bum everyday. When I mentioned Velma, both my friend, husband and a girl at work all laughed and said it was true. Bleh. (although, to be honest, Velma is my favorite, lol)

On to the pictures )

Fabric Donation?

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Does anyone know where I can donate a ton of fabric I have (mostly novelty knits)? I can't bear to throw it all out, it's all well kept, but I just don't need any of it. Doesn't matter if I have to take the fabric to the place or if they do pick up. Queens and Midtown preferred, but really I'll go anywhere.

Also, bonus if anyone knows a place that might pay for it too. Thanks in advance!

Apologies

As I'm sure everyone noticed, I've been posting in this community about the "tribute show" at The Delancey for The Gits movie and Mia Zapata. I just want to apologize to anyone who may have gone because of my promotion.

That "tribute" turned into the most disgusting display of metalhead ego and self righteousness I have ever witnessed.  What was meant to be an actual tribute to honor an amazing woman and band turned into Ozzfest 08 sponsored by Jagermeister. I'm disgusted and saddened that the entire show was hijacked by absolute disrespectful trash.

I had to leave to maintain any self respect I had left. I promoted the show because it was supposed to be a positive event to HONOR and remember somone. I'd rather not stand there and watch a "tribute band" full of metal head "all-stars" read Mia's lyrics off a piece of paper dispassionately, all because they were guaranteed $200 each. What kind of person plays a tribute show and wants money for it? What kind of person WANTS to play a tribute show for someone they didn't know existed? People who only want to feed their ego and wallet, I guess. Kathleen Hanna went and didn't even get paid because she has respect.

If you want to honor Mia Zapata and The Gits, or just support awesome film makers and learn about an amazing band, see the movie The Gits (www.myspace.com/thegitsmovie) at the Pioneer Theater. Again, I'm sorry I bombarded the community with (what turned out to be) trash.

Italian Rock Star magazine

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Does anyone know where can I get/buy an italian magazine called Rock Star? I'm not sure if it's sold in NY, but if it is I would really appreciate if you'd let me know.

Thank you!

Thank you all so much for the great advice you gave on my last post.  I just have a couple more questions.  I searched through the tags but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

The flight I'm taking arrives at the airport in Newark.  The airline offers a one way ride from the airport to my hotel in Manhattan.  It also offers a one way ride from the hotel back to the airport on my last day.  It's $19 per ride.  Has anyone used this mode of transportation and can vouch for it?  I'm just worried that I won't be able to get the bus to come pick me up at the hotel and get me to the airport in time when I'm ready to depart.  Any suggestions?  I'm flying from Atlanta into Newark and staying at the Marrakech hotel, if that helps any.

probably an obvious question

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 2:09 PM
my boyfriend and i are planning on going night swimming later today, either at coney or brighton.
we've gone to both before during the day but with people to take turns watching our stuff.
now it would be just us but neither of us know what the hell to do with our crap. do you just leave it there and hope no one takes it?
i'm trying to pare down to the essentials but i'm worried about even just my essentials getting jacked.

what do you guys do?
my boyfriend grew up here his entire life and HE has no fucking idea!

Sushi

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
This is a little too picky for google or yelp to cover.  Can anyone recommend a sushi place that doesn't habitually sprinkle all of its rolls with sesame seeds?  Cheap to moderate prices, in manhattan--let's say anywhere from 4th street and above.

restaurant recs?

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 12:09 PM
posting this almost makes me cringe in fear but i need something quick.

i'm meeting a friend who i haven't seen in a while for dinner tonight. he's coming in from jersey city, so we're looking for a restaurant in the soho/tribeca/financial district or even as high up as the w. village. we're not picky, we want to try something new, but trying to decide on something by fishing through pages and pages of menu pages is getting exhausting and i'm running out of time as i have class and he's at work.

help?

good food, not too expensive, maybe $30 or less per person? cuisine isn't really an issue, we want to explore.

merci enormément.

Student Loans- yipeee!

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Anyone here apply for a student loan WITHOUT a co-signer?

Its getting to be about that time and it seems to me that no one will approve me without the dreaded parents.

danke.

Sweltering Something

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Something cheap to do on a disgustingly hot day like today?

Besides sit in and kill your electric bill, of course.

Preferably in Manhattan.

Generator

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 10:37 AM
I am looking to buy a hand-crack electrical generator: around 4 pounds, and generates either 60 W, 80 W or 120 W of electricity. Where can I purchase one of these things in NYC? Price is not an issue. I would prefer new. Thanks!
